Mount Cheaha 50K Trail Race

Febuary 27th I lined up for my first long trail race of the year..... Mount Cheaha 50K. I was hoping to have a 50K under my belt leading up to this race, but I did not get to run Mountain Mist due to stomach issues in January. For those of you who don't know much about this trail (mostly on the Pinhoti)... All I can say is it's one hard mother!!! The terrain is some of the most technical I've ever seen. The course is rocky.... has several steep ups and downs including one MAJOR climb in the last 3 miles of the race!!

The day before the race... I drove down with Carl and Cat and we met up with our other Chattanooga friends at the park. We were lucky enough to have been invited to stay in a Chalet inside the park with Charlene and Nik. Staying there versus driving off the mountain into town sure did simplify things and made race day easier too!

I went into this race expecting not to do so well and was hoping it would give me the kick in the arse I much needed to get things rolling again. Well.... it did just that!... Unfortunately I had been coming down with some sort of sinus thing the night before (little to my knowledge that it would last nearly 3 weeks later)! Carl and I ran the entire race together and we both agreed that the course was much more climbing and much more rocky than we had remembered from the year before. No worries... somehow we toughed it out and managed to shuffle ourselves across the finish line! My finish time was very close to the year before... even though my fitness and health were in much worse shape compared to then.

If you like tough and epic... sign-up for this race next year. You'll get your monies worth!
